    Help to translate "stova"

I need help in the translation of Vargsången

    Vargen ylar i nattens skog
(The wolf is howling in the forest of the night)
Han vill men kan inte sova
(He wants to, but cannot sleep)
Hungern river i hans varga buk
(The hunger tears his wolven stomach)
Och det är kallt i hans stova
(And it's cold in his burrow)

I can not find the word "stova" in dictionaries. I hesitate that "varg" lives in the burrow. He is not like a fox. Could you give me please the explanation what means "stova"? Are there another examples of using this word?

Troligen alternativ stavning på stuva = stuga.
Precis! Ordet stova är synonymt med stuga och kan beskrivas som ”(ålderdomligt, dialektalt) stuga” när man kollar på synonymer.

The song has already been translated though, Alexander. So not sure why you need to translate it.

It's ancient swedish meaning cottage. In this case lair - since wolves don't live in cottages - or maybe burrow, as you suggest yourself.

It is also a public parking lot in Vilnius, but I think even cottage is a better option compared to that

I know this translation, thank you. But "burrow" means "håla", not "stova".
I have found stova in norsk ordbok (runeberg.org/nordialect/0573.html). It means a living room with windows. I think that "burrow" is incorrect  translation.
When you translate lyrics, you don´t do a word for word translation (that would be very weird). The correct word is cottage, not living room with windows. But I think that burrow, or lair like somebody suggested, is the most fitting for the song. The most important thing is to convey the meaning and understanding of the song, not that every single word has to be correct.

Stova, stuva or stugha is old Swedish for cottage. It is not the same as in Norwegian. Staava, stova in Norwegian is probably old for stue (living room) since there is describes as ?room with windows??

But Astrid means burrow or den or similar and not cottage.

Jag blev lite sugen på att testa utan att köra ord mot ord:

A whimpering wolf in the dark forest,

Sleepless by a burning hunger and The chilling cold lair.

thou wolf, thou wolf, don?t come here, you?ll never reach my baby.

The wolf is howling in the dark forest,

    Howling in hunger and despair.

But I will hand him a pigs tail, that?s suited for for a hungry wolf

Thou wolf, thou wolf, don?t come here, you?ll never reach my baby.

The wolf is whimpering in the dark forest, but cannot find a prey.

But I will hand him a cockscomb, for him to save.

Thou wolf, thou wolf, don?t come here. You?ll never take my baby.

Sleep, my child, in your mother embrace, and let the wolf howl in the night.

But I will hand him leg of a hen, If I have some left.

Thou wolf, thou wolf, don?t come here.

    You?ll never take my baby.

Thank you very much! I agree that it is incorrect to translated single words. It is necessary to understand the meaning of the whole phrases and  the text. I have translated this song equirythmically into Russian, and agree that the most correct translation of stova is lair.

Could you please give the swedish text of this? I see here twice more verses.

    Vargen ylar i nattens skog,

han vill men kan inte sova.

    Hungern river hans vargabuk,

och det är kallt i hans stova.

Du varg, du varg, kom inte hit,

    ungen min får du aldrig.

    Vargen ylar i nattens skog,

    ylar av hunger och klagan.

Men jag ska ge'n en grisasvans,

    sånt passar i vargamagar.

Du varg, du varg, kom inte hit,

    ungen min får du aldrig.

    Vargen ylar i natten skog,

    och hittar sig inget byte.

Men jag ska ge'n en tuppakam,

att stoppa ner i sitt knyte.

Du varg, du varg, kom inte hit,

    ungen min får du aldrig.

Sov, mitt barn, i bädden hos mor,

    låt vargen yla i natten.

Men jag ska ge'n en hönsaskank,

om ingen annan har tatt 'en.

Du varg, du varg, kom inte hit,

    ungen min får du aldrig.

Thank you very very much! It is great!
I have written two verses in Russian, but now I have to think about other verses.

Du är ute på jävla hal is nu, du inser det va? Ok att du översätter gammla visor och skillingtryck, som inte ägs av någon och har släppts från tidsskyddet, men Vargssången har faktiskt fortfarande copyright och får ägarna nys om att du översätter och publicerar utan lov så riskerar du att åka på en smäll som heter duga.

Gamla matvaror i kylen? Först får de päls, sen börjar de morra och SEN går de ut.

If I understood Alexander correctly, he does not translate the song for financial gain. It is natural that he mention than Astrid Lindgren (and Björn Isfält if Alexander also record) holds the copyright (or their inheritors).

  • AlexanderFionov

Thank you for your comments. I shall investigate the copyright question and I can delete my translation and recordings if nesessary, it is no problem. I have already deleted two my translations - for Gallivarerallarna and Sjoman sluta dromma.

  • AlexanderFionov

Thank you very much! Unfortunately, I had to delete my translation from the web because of the copyright. I do not know how I could get a permission for the translation.
