Pre-birth
Maybe you have a medical scheme, maybe you don't, and almost certainly there are limitations on what it will cover. Some doctors prefer you to pay upfront; others don't mind dealing directly with medical schemes. It would be smart to sort all that out right away, so you know what you're likely to be in for in terms of medical bills.
Depending on the city and the doctor, every appointment may be upwards of R200. You're encouraged to go every six weeks until the third trimester, at which point your visits should become fortnightly. In your final month you will probably have a weekly appointment. Most pregnant woman will therefore go to 11-12 consultations. Cost: around R2500 and upwards.
Those experiencing a high-risk pregnancy will be encouraged to go for more consultations. Add these visits together, plus the specialist test at 12 to 13 weeks and again at 22 weeks for Down's syndrome and other genetic disorders, and you could be forking out over R4000.
Let's not forget your changing form - you don't want to look anything less than fabulous during this time. Whether you go the maternity-wear route or adapt regular clothes, you are going to have to fork out. Don't be tempted to skimp on bras... right now you need good support, so don't go for sexy over sensible.
Birth
Who worries about how much the midwife will be paid when they're in mid-action during labour? That's why you need to plan for it now. Remember you'll also be billed by the hospital, the gynae, the anaesthetist (if you have one), the paediatrician...
Depending on your health and the health of your newborn, a bill of around R8000 is your starting point. One private clinic we canvassed offers a "delivery package", which costs R12500 and includes a three-day bed tariff, hospital stock used, and limited nursery usage. It doesn't include the doctor's fee (around R3000 for a vaginal delivery); the epidural (average R1200); or the cost of additional hospital stay.
If you have a Caesarean, you can expect to pay a great deal more.
