Lisa Francesca Nand bravely lets viewers into her struggle to become a mum as she suffers five miscarriages while trying for a family.
One brave woman and her husband open up about the painful heartbreak they endured after having three miscarriages in their quest for a family.
The First Heartbeat documentary is a bold and honest look at the emotional journey women and their partners go through after suffering a miscarriage.
For journalist Lisa Francesca Nand and husband David, the self-made film was an important part of opening up the conversation about miscarriage and those who are currently dealing with the trauma.
Struggling to conceive her first child, Lisa was given devastating news by specialist doctor Dr Hassan Shehata that she had an unusually high count of natural killer (NK) cells, which meant she would never be able to carry a baby without her body killing it.
Already having two miscarriages earlier in her life, Lisa has a third and she says after deciding on a punishing course of steroids to help get her pregnant: "I'll do whatever it takes to prevent another one."
But the couple tragically have to deal with another loss as Lisa lost another child.
The journalist has to go through a procedure to remove the fetus and as she's dropped off at the hospital by David, and things get very emotional for him.
In the video, he says: "I've just left Lisa in the hospital which was one of the most ... I didn't show it ? but one of the most emotional things I've ever had to do."
Breaking down in tears he carries on: "They said I can wait with her but I said I've got to go? She's looked so vulnerable - she's like a little girl.
"I know it's going to be alright, but I want to be there. It's all so bloody sad. I've got to film it because it's some of the strongest emotions I've ever had."
During a trip to LA to visit family, Lisa does a pregnancy test and gets a positive, but it's a race against time for the mum-to-be who needs a dose of the intralipid medication she has been taking.
It's a stressful time for the couple who have to sit in wait for several weeks until a scan can show them their baby's heartbeat.
Finally, for the couple their first child is on it's way and Sebastian Christopher Kirk is born in 2012, but soon after Lisa falls pregnant again and suffers another miscarriage before going on to have her second child Elliot, in 2014.
"I suffered five miscarriages - but even one is devastating," says Lisa.
"I want to get people talking about this issue to realise they are not alone."
