Facebook svarar nu med att bryta alla kontakter med dataanalysföretaget.

”Vi kommer att vidta rättsliga åtgärder om det är nödvändigt för att hålla dem ansvariga och till svars för något som helst olagligt beteende”, skriver Facebook i ett uttalande.

Cambridge Analytica ska ha kommit över de första uppgifterna 2014. Det gjordes via en app kallad ”thisisyourdigitallife”, som byggts av Aleksandr Kogan, verksam vid Cambridge University. Drygt en kvarts miljon Facebook-användare hade fått betalt för att göra personlighetstester via appen. De hade godkänt att uppgifterna samlats in för forskningssyften.  Enligt New York Times och The Observer sålde Aleksandr Kogan  uppgifterna vidare till Cambridge Analytica.

Utan tillstånd samlades också uppgifter in om de 270.000 användarnas Facebook-vänner. Över 50 miljoner människor fanns till slut i arkivet – nästan en fjärdedel av de potentiella väljarna i presidentvalet valet i november 2016. 

Utifrån personuppgifterna fanns sedan möjlighet att kartlägga åsikter och skicka individuellt anpassade politiska budskap för att påverka personernas val.

– Vi utnyttjade Facebook till att skörda miljontals människors profiler. Och bygga modeller för att utnyttja vad vi visste om dem och sikta in oss på deras inre demoner. Det var grunden som hela företaget var byggt på, säger Christopher Wylie, som beskrivs som en visselblåsare som jobbat på Cambridge Analytica, enligt The Observer."

"In 2014, after hearing feedback from the Facebook community, we made an update to ensure that each person decides what information they want to share about themselves, including their friend list," the statement said.

Facebook on Friday banned Kogan, the parent company of Cambridge Analytica and a former Cambridge employee for improperly sharing the data and failing to destroy it after concerns arose about it in 2015. Facebook had asked the parties back then to certify they would not abuse data, but it did not take further action beyond that warning."
